Ocean State Job Lot is Coming to Bedford

Ocean State Job Lot will be opening a new store at the old Staples location at 297 Great Road in the Great Road Shopping Center. This is expected to be their 120th store. Stay tuned for more details.

This is a junk dollar store similar to dollar general, smaller than building 19, lower end than Christmas tree shop. Disappointing. Agree, the small town character was not preserved.

They are lucky to get anything new in that plaza. The owner has a terrible reputation with higher end retail clients..

Ocean State Job Lot will be a good addition to the plaza. I don't see any reason to be disappointed they sell stuff that people need at reasonable prices. It does not reduce the character of the town. We pick up stuff at Dollar Tree and Five Below all the time.

The whole town doesn't need to have fancy little upscale stores.
Didn't that plaza at one point have Bradlees that location and Woolworths at another spot in the plaza.

Don't follow this logic. Bedford does not have fancy little upscale stores nor could it support them (they all fail - Bella was one that was at the current UPS Store). Past retail from decades ago is not relevant when projecting what this says about how marketers and demographers see for Bedford. Ocean State is a small Building 19. Dicks Sporting Goods, Petco, PetSmart would be examples of a positive message about the Bedford market conditions if they took this spot.

Staples somehow preserved small town character and Ocean State Job lot does not?
Nothing wrong with Ocean State Job lot. It is at least locally run company from RI.
Ocean State Job Lot, headquartered in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, is an American chain of 115 discount stores operating in New England.

because it is a regionally owned company it makes it okay? Bldg. 19 was locally owned. Bedford could and should attract better. Getting Ocean State dollar store is disappointing and probably risks Stop and Shop staying at this location after their merger.

I hope Stop & Shop leaves. It would leave an opening for Trader Joe's.

Folks, look at the hoops the selectmen have made new businesses jump through trying to open up here in Town. They gave the new restaurant in the Marshall's plaza so much highly publicized grief, it's no wonder Bedford can't seem to attract the same type of places Burlington can. When these corporations research what Towns are business friendly, they soon realize the steps the Selectmen make them go through here, and it's just not worth the time or effort with Burlington right next door more than willing to work with a new business.

Hi Anonymous,

With respect to Trade Joe's. They currently have store in Burlington, Arlington and in Acton. Typically there stores are a little over 10,000 square feet which is a lot smaller than the space currently used by Stop and Shop. If I had to guess I would say they will take a look at space in Lexington center. The Trader Joe website does have a request a store page.

Anonymous, yes, the Selectman come across as hostile to business and economic development. Selectman and Boards seem ideological, out of touch, and push a groupthink agenda(affordable housing, smart growth, unreasonable sustainability and restrictions, limitations on asphalt that results on too little parking or spots only for compact vehicles, and needless delay of projects scaring prospective investors and companies away to Burlington.

Stop and Shop employees provide top customer service. We have Whole Foods. No need for Trader Joes.

Give us a Market Basket. If stop & shop merges with Canntaford I will travel elsewhere to go grocery shopping. They are way over priced and stop & shop has bad produce. Whole Foods is nice but for a family on a budget, market basket wins.

The issue here is this is not good to have prime retail space in major shopping area going to a low end dollar store. Current and projected demographic changes likely made this location attractive to Ocean State Job Lot. The result will be that it will difficult to lease to mid-market retailers again there.

As for markets; Wegmans has best selection of all and LOT less than S & S.

Wow, did somebody say Stop & Shop has good customer service?! Personally I have found their service poor. One time I went to the 'solutions' desk and asked if they had an item. The person just shrugged... And yes, I agree, their produce is not very good either.

Ocean State Job Lot is nothing like Dollar Tree or Five Below. I bet you've never really checked it out. I just saw patio furniture, some nice rugs, kayaks, air conditioners, bedding, curtains, gas grills, etc. You won't see that at those cheapo stores.

I've lived in Bedford my entire life, and I believe an Ocean State would be a great addition to our town. This isn't Concord, and it sure isn't Billerica, it's a working class town with people who can't always afford to hand over top dollar blindly. I like the thought of something new in this town, that isn't another bank. So all of you yuppies who keep building McMansions, and think it should be some high end store that will generate some window shopping at best, can drive your ass over to the mall for your entitlements.

Anonymous - thanks for the additional recent comments. From what I have seen so far, Ocean State seems to have a pretty good feel of where to locate their stores. I predict they will do pretty well in Bedford. I'll see if I can dig up more information on when they expect to open.

What is wrong with you people. Why not get quality 'stuff' that you need and will use at the best price that you can?? I live in Bedford as well. I can afford to go anywhere to shop. This is a cool store with some high end BRAND NAME items that ARE NOT defective.
T have gone into the Bedford store and its clean, well stocked, the sales people that they have hired are very nice, helpful, and professional. I find neat stuff for ALOT less.
Nothing wrong with that! Lose the SNOBBY ATTITUDE.

Very happy to see a Job Lot open in Bedford, which is closer to us than the one in Waltham. Each time we have been to the Bedford Job Lot it is packed with shoppers and the selection is good. No complaints here. Glad to have that store nearby.
