New Italian Restaurant Coming to Bedford Marketplace

Comella's Restaurant is expected to open at 158H Great Road in the Bedford Marketplace. The restaurant, which focuses on homemade Italian foods, currently has 12 locations in the Boston area including Concord and Arlington. The menu features Salads, Sandwiches, Soups, Pastas, Pizzas, Traditional Italian Entrees and Desserts.

Most locations are fairly small, with less than 20 seats and do a significant amount of take out business as well as corporate catering.

Stay tuned for more details.

Cafe Luigi should have had first choice.

Luigi's did have first choice a long time ago, they wasted time and in the end could not come to an agreement with the current management.

Sweet, more mediocre faux Italian restaurant choices!

Down goes Bedford.
An institution and destination restaurant that attracted people from distance to come eat and shop in Bedford is gone. Commella's is fine, but not Luigi's and not a destination location given they have other nearby locations. Huge loss.

Sounds like Luigi's didn't want to pay what the landlord was asking for rent.

maybe it was rent, maybe it was interpersonal relationship with new landlord, maybe other? At town meeting, the landlord said that the reason Luigi's was not coming back was that "two of the three owners of Luigi's were retiring". Turns out that was not true since Luigi's wants to reopen in or near Bedford ASAP. The plaza is likely worth more with Luigi's there, than not, since Luigi's generates more traffic from outside of Bedford which makes adjacent retail locations more marketable to rent at higher rates.

Hi Anonymous - Good points about the plaza being worth more. Seems like it would be a good business decision to lease out space to a very popular restaurant to draw people in. On the other hand if you are looking to sell a Shopping Center, then a good mix of National brand tenants may increase it's overall value.

... And that's the reality. This renovation isn't "for us". The idea is to pack it full of established generic National brands and sell it quickly. I know it's just how the free market works but it's annoying anyway.

Hi Daria,

Thanks for the comment. What new businesses would you like to see in Bedford Marketplace?

My dream tenants would include a classic breakfast/brunch diner with awesome omelets, fluffy stacks of pancakes and waitresses named Flo, and an independent cafe/rare bookstore with local art on the walls and a weekly poetry night ... A place where the locals gather to argue about weather and politics. I know, I know.... I'm wild and crazy with my ideas :)

I am serious about the breakfast restaurant. A toy/kids bookshop would also be nice but I think learning express has that covered.

Hi Daria,

I agree on the breakfast place. That is missing in Bedford. AFAIK there are no plans for this in Bedford Marketplace. However the old Sparta location is still available and the owner is very interested in having another restaurant at the location. Do you know a good breakfast place in the surrounding area? Maybe we can convince them to open an additional location.
